Flag Day

Crimean Tatar Flag Day coincided with the start of the state of emergency in Crimea. Consequently, for the first time, there were no mass events on the peninsula. The traditional climb up Çatır Dağ was cancelled, motorcades carrying the flag were banned, and people are currently trying to avoid using petrol unnecessarily. The Flag Day celebrations took place online.

Crimean Tatar Flag Day attracted a large number of participants in the Ukrainian capital. In Pyrohovo, journalists estimated the crowd at around half a thousand people. The foundation stone for the first Crimean farmstead was laid there. For many years, the open-air museum has served as a venue for showcasing traditional houses from various regions of Ukraine. However, until now, there had been no exhibits representing Crimea.

In Düsseldorf, Germany, Crimean Tatar activists from the Dostlar group organised a motorcade flying national flags. The event took place on 27 June, and this was not a delay: the official date of 26 June is celebrated over three days because, according to historians, the idea for the holiday originated on 28 June, however, a political decision was taken to link this day to the opening of the first session of the revived Kurultai of the Crimean Tatar people, which took place in Aqmescit on 26 June 1991.

A new way of celebrating Flag Day was introduced by the Assembly of Crimean Organisations, based in Germany. In Berlin, the ACO organised a run featuring Crimean Tatar flags. The sporting event was expected to attract 60 participants, but due to the extreme heat in the German capital, only 18 decided to take part.

The Berlin run followed a route from the Victory Column to the Brandenburg Gate. One of the runners, Frank-Peter Wilde, carried a portrait of the Crimean political prisoner Bohdan Ziza throughout the race. In 2022, the Ukrainian artist splashed yellow and blue paint over the Kezlev administration building (in Yevpatoria). For this act of protest, the occupiers sentenced Bohdan to 15 years in prison.
